Director Profile: Michael Macfie of MACFIE ARCHITECTURE

Michael Macfie is a practicing architectural designer with an extensive portfolio developed over his 18-year career. He is the founding director of Macfie Architecture, which he started in 2006 alongside his wife, Rebecca, who serves as the Practice Director.

The practice is located in a historic loft space in Devonport, Auckland, and has established a reputation for specialising in heritage zoned residential renovations and extensions, as well as architecturally significant new builds. Michael’s journey into architecture began with training and work as a draftsperson for his father's construction company.

After completing his university eduction in Auckland, he gained experience in England, Australia, and New Zealand. With a diverse background in design, building, heritage, and contemporary architecture, Michael has developed a comprehensive portfolio of residential projects, guiding them from initial concept to detailed design.

He is particularly passionate about the successful integration of new architecture with old, focusing on the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings across New Zealand. Michael is especially drawn to residential alterations and renovations, where his strong understanding of historical forms and details shines through.

He values building excellent relationships with clients and believes that open communication between the architectural designer, client, and contractor is key to achieving exceptional results that surpass expectations.
